Global South Transgender, Intersex, and Nonbinary Stories Unleashed

The word “Jaha” originates from the Arabic root ج-ا-ه (jīm-alif-hā), meaning social status, dignity, or collective influence, and traditionally refers to a delegation or group representing honor and mediation, reimagined here to celebrate the collective power, pride, and resilience of queer and trans communities.

JAHA Film Festival is a radical and joyful celebration of trans, intersex, and nonbinary (TIN) film makers from the Global South. In a world that seeks to silence us, we reclaim our stories, amplify our voices, and fight for freedom and liberation through the transformative power of cinema. we are centering Palestinian voices as an interactive tissue that brings together liberation for all people.

Palestine is transcending the binary narrative imposed by Israel, the last European colony in the Arab region and one of the few remaining in the Global South. As Palestinian liberation fundamentally challenges the colonial narrative perpetuated by Israel's illegitimate presence, JAHA centers the intersectional stories of Palestinian transgender individuals. While deeply rooted in the specific Palestinian struggle, this focus illuminates the shared experiences of transgender communities across the Global South. JAHA's work revitalizes the spirit of freedom and sharpens the lens of film, bringing to light stories systematically suppressed by the intertwined forces of religious supremacy, colonial power, and new fascism – including Zionism and other totalitarian systems imposed by the Global North.

By foregrounding Palestinian transgender resistance, JAHA not only reclaims their narrative but also forges resonant solidarity, offering a vital blueprint for liberation that challenges intersecting oppressions faced by all marginalized genders under colonial and neo-fascist regimes worldwide.

Mission

JAHA is a cinematic weapon of collective liberation. We platform trans, intersex, and nonbinary stories from the Global South to celebrate our unruly diversity, fortify global solidarity, and sear our truths into the world’s imagination through film.

Vision

The JAHA Film Festival envisions a world where the lens of trans, intersex, and nonbinary communities from the global south is not just seen, but celebrated, uplifted, and unapologetically essential.
In defiance of a heteronormative, colonial world intent on silencing us, we rise as storytellers, artists, and changemakers, claiming our rightful space.

JAHA is this uprising embodied: a vital cultural movement, a stand for collective freedom, a celebration of our shared humanity.
Our impact extends beyond the screen: we are building a global school for trans and gender studies. Curated by scholars, activists, and lived experience, this curriculum will preserve our legacy and democratize access to knowledge for the world.
